Authorities are seeking to identify potential additional victims of a Mission Viejo massage parlor owner who allegedly sexually assaulted two clients, officials said Friday.

Qing Dai is seen in a photo released on July 28, 2017, by Orange County sheriff’s officials.

Qing Dai, 40, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of assaulting woman at Sunny’s Massage, which he owns and also works at as a massage therapist, according to a press release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies were first approached about Dai’s alleged conduct on May 16, when a woman reported he sexually assaulted her during her one-hour massage at his business, located at 24000 Alicia Parkway. A second woman reported she was also sexually assaulted during her massage on June 15, officials said.

Deputies said one of the victims was a 37-year-old woman but did not provide any further details about the victims.

As detectives were looking into the claims, they discovered two previous Sunny’s Massage customers had lodged similar allegations.

Dai, a Mission Viejo resident, was being held in Orange County jail on suspicion of sexual battery.

Officials said they believe there could be additional victims because of the length of time Dai has been the registered owner of Sunny’s Massage and worked as a massage therapist, though they did not disclose how long that had been.

Anyone with additional information or who believes they were a victim can contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at 714-647-7419, or submit a tip anonymously via 855-847-6227.

An 11-year-old girl who lost her leg in an accident when she was a toddler is not the same girl was five days ago. On Friday, she ran the bases.

That’s because of a week spent with the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team, a group of veterans and active-duty military personnel whose missing limbs don’t prevent from competing on the field.

Chloe Schmidt is one of the young participants -- who come from all over the country -- at a weeklong camp hosted by the team in Mission Viejo.

“It’s really a life-changing experience,” Schmidt said. “They can teach me how to run, or how to do things I didn’t know I could do, and do them better too.”

As a little girl, Schmidt slip under a lawnmower her father was using, and he didn't see her. The Maryland girl's left leg was amputated.

Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team, a Virginia-based 501(c)3 nonprofit, has a mission to educate and inspire, in addition to supporting its team members. The team plays against able-bodied opponents across the country in exhibition teams.

The organization’s Kids Camp lets team members show children between 8 and 12 who were born without a limb or went through an amputation how they can excel athletically. The week in Mission Viejo marks the camp's third incarnation since the first camp in Florida in 2013, according to the team's website.

“Every kid has their own story, and every kid’s overcome so much,” said team member Sgt. Chris Hutton.

Hutton survived two tours in Iraq, but lost his leg to a drunk driver after returning home. He said he could not fathom growing up missing a limb.

"It makes the hair stand on my arms, just how they get through life," Hutton said.

Camp founder Susan Rodio said the adult team members benefit too.

“They healed from their injuries, but this gave them a purpose again,” Rodio said.

On Friday evening, the campers will go to head to head for a game that marks the conclusion of the week: Thunder versus Lightning.

On June 20, the adult team heads to Akron, Ohio, for a double-header.

An attorney convicted of killing a cyclist in Mission Viejo while under the influence of prescription drugs was sentenced Friday to four years in prison.

Hasti Fakhrai-Bayrooti, 41, pleaded guilty on March 10 to one felony count of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the 2013 crash, according to a news release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The Rancho Santa Margarita woman also pleaded guilty Friday to one felony count of possession of a controlled substance while in jail.

She was sentenced to another three years in jail for that offense, to be served concurrently with Friday’s prison sentence, the release stated.

The crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. on March 15, 2013 on Santa Margarita Parkway south of El Toro Road, near Trabuco Hills High School, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Fakhrai-Bayrooti was driving southbound when she veered into the bike lane, striking Eric Billings, the release stated.

The impact sent the 54-year-old bicyclist over the hood and windshield of the car, according to the release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time of the crash, Fakhrai-Bayrooti was under the influence of prescription drugs, including Xanax and Suboxone, according to the DA’s Office.

Raymond William Henry II, 57, was taken into custody on Friday and was being held on $20,000 bail, according to a news release from the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The arrest was the result of an investigation that began Thursday when a person reported finding an iPad inside a vehicle after it was returned to a car-rental business, the department said.

Members of the sheriff's Special Victims Unit contacted the person who discovered the computer tablet, and were informed that it "contained photos of naked females ranging in age from 11 to 13 years old, exposing their genitals," the release said.

According to officials, investigators also found numerous images of female minors wearing Trabuco Hills High School uniforms and participating in track and field activities.

Authorities subsequently learned that Henry is an athletics coach and teacher's aide at the high school, the statement said.

A spokesperson for the Saddleback Unified School District did not immediately respond to a telephone call seeking comment.

Henry, a Laguna Niguel resident, was booked into the Orange County jail on suspicion of possessing child pornography. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Retired LAPD Detective, 70, Suspected of Being ‘Snowbird Bandit,’ Robbing 5 Orange County Banks: OCSD

A 70-year-old retired Los Angeles Police Department detective was identified Thursday as the “Snowbird Bandit,” who robbed five Orange County banks between March and July, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Randolph Bruce Adair, of Rancho Santa Margarita, was arrested Wednesday after several family members saw media reports about the “Snowbird Bandit” and contacted investigators, according to OCSD.

Details regarding what information family members were able to provide was not given, and a booking photo was not released due to the ongoing investigation.

Adair is suspected of robbing five banks:

  • First Citizens Bank in Rancho Santa Margarita on July 21
  • U.S. Bank in Ladera Ranch on July 6
  • Wells Fargo Bank in Mission Viejo on June 11
  • First Citizens Bank in Rancho Santa Margarita on May 22
  • California Bank & Trust in Dana Point on March 20

The former detective worked with the LAPD some 30 years ago, according to OCSD Lt. Jeff Hallock.

“It’s shocking and it’s unfortunate,” Hallock said.

Neighbors were surprised by Adair’s arrest and told KTLA he seemed like a normal man.

“He would just be on his porch smoking cigars and just watching the neighborhood,” neighbor Chris Zeif said. “Just talking to people when they walked by – ‘How are you doing? How is everything?’”

Hallock said Adair’s motive was not known, but “generally speaking” robbers have issues with addiction.

“(Robbers) will indicate that a lot of time the bank robberies are as a result of some type of addiction, whether it’s a drug addiction or a gambling addiction or something like that,” Hallock said.

Adair was arrested on suspicion of robbery and an outstanding warrant and held in lieu of $205,000 bail at an Orange County jail.

Investigators planned to pursue federal charges, the OCSD news release stated.

Anyone with additional information was asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 714-647-7000 or the Bank Robbery Apprehension Team at 949-939-8699. Anonymous tips could be submitted to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-847-6227 or at occrimestoppers.org.

Mission Viejo Teacher Cleared of Lewd Acts Says Misunderstanding Turned Innocent Gesture Into Criminal Act

A Mission Viejo middle-school teacher who saw the allegations that she committed lewd acts with a student dropped in criminal court spoke out Monday to share her side of the story, nearly a year after the case was first made public.

Kristen Roush, a teacher at La Paz Intermediate School, was arrested on Oct. 24, 2014, at her Aliso Viejo home and held on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a child.

Roush had just pulled into the garage with her youngest daughter, who was in preschool at the time, when investigators suddenly appeared.

"Three men showed up behind my car at the garage and said they needed to talk to me and that I needed to call someone to take my child," Roush said. According to the 35-year-old mother of two, the detectives threatened to call child protective services if she didn't call someone first.

Roush's arrest followed a monthslong investigation into her interactions with a 15-year-old boy whose parents told authorities they believed the relationship was inappropriate. Evidence on her cellphone linked her to the child, the Sheriff’s Department said at the time of her arrest.

The student accused her of kissing him, the Orange County Register reported.

Speaking to KTLA on Monday, Roush denied any inappropriate contact with the teenager or with any other student. Roush claimed the student's mother jumped to conclusions when she gave the boy a ride home.

"He got out of the car and she said, 'you are not supposed to be with her,'" Roush told KTLA. "I said I was under the impression he had permission and she said 'kids lie all the time.'"

Roush said she had her own two children in the car at the time.

The boy's mother called 911, which Roush and her attorney claimed led to innocent gestures being misinterpreted as criminal.

"The most contact Kristen had with her students, and it was more than one, were hugs, innocent hugs," said attorney David Wohl.

At her arraignment in November, Roush was supported by her husband, with whom she has two children, and her parents and former co-workers.

Then, this July, she took a plea deal, agreeing to admit to one misdemeanor charge of battery on school property. All felony counts of lewd acts were dismissed, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said.

On Sept. 18, she was sentenced to three years of formal probation for the misdemeanor charge. Roush said the battery charge was for one of those hugs.

As part of the plea deal, Roush agreed to resign her teaching position, according to the prosecutor in the case.

“There was no way for her to ever go back,” her attorney, David Wohl, told the newspaper. “She’s basically weighing her options. She’s a very smart woman, and she has great family support and has weathered this fairly well. She knew she was innocent.”

Roush said she took the plea deal to spare her family the expense of a trial and to protect those who believed in her from being dragged into court.

The robbers took an unknown amount of Rolex watches and jewelry from Fredric H. Rubel Jewelers during the incident, which was first tweeted by the Orange County Sheriff's Department at 12:19 p.m.

Surveillance video showed the robbers using hand-held tools to break glass display cases full of jewelry.

Once the glass was broken, the robbers scooped the contents of the cases into the sacks they were carrying and fled the store.

Others in the store took cover as at least one of the robbers brandished a firearm.

The robbers were all wearing dark-colored hooded sweatshirts during the incident, which lasted about 60 seconds.

Some people near the incident mistook the sound of breaking glass for gunshots, according to Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

No shots were fired and no injures were reported, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The robbers were said to all be men and were apparently armed, according to the Sheriff's Department's tweet.

They were suspected of changing vehicles after making their getaway and conflicting descriptions of the robbers were given to officials so descriptions were not available, Hallock said.

The stolen watches were fixed with tracking devices, which led investigators to the northbound 405 Freeway between Beach Boulevard and Newland Street in the Huntington Beach area.

Witnesses told sheriff's officials they saw bags being thrown out of a vehicle, and video of the scene showed watches on the roadway. However, Hallock said they could not immediately confirm the objects found were the stolen watches.

"The suspects were described as male, African-Americans, wearing black masks and clothing," according to a news release from the Sheriff's Department.

Anyone with information regarding the robbery was asked to call the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at 714-647-7000.  Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS (855-847-6227) or at occrimestoppers.org.

Lightning strikes during a powerful thunderstorm that rolled through Southern California on Monday morning caused trees to catch fire and sparked a blaze that resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in damages at several businesses.

Video posted to Twitter shortly before 7 a.m. captured the moments after a lightning bolt struck in the area of Mariposa Avenue and Second Street. The strike ignited a palm tree sitting in the front yard of a residential property.

Twitter user Ken Chung, who recorded the footage while heading to work, said he immediately dialed 911 to report the blaze.

In Mission Viejo, firefighters responded to the 26000 block of Crown Valley Parkway after an attic fire erupted when the structure was hit by lightning, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The flames were extinguished, but not before a total of five businesses were impacted. The blaze caused about $30,000 in damages, fire officials said.

Some residents reported being awoken by the storm, which brought lightning, thunder, heavy rain and even hail to parts of the Southland in the overnight and early morning hours.

Surveillance video showing three men committing an armed robbery of a Mission Viejo pharmacy was released by authorities on Thursday.

The crime occurred 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Employees from Cal-Med Pharmacy, at 24031 Marguerite Parkway, reported the robbery at 9:08 p.m., a sheriff’s lieutenant told the Orange County Register.

The newspaper reported it wasn’t known what the robbers got away with.

Orange County has experienced a string of thefts at pharmacies in recent months, with burglars targeting a prescription cough syrup that is used in a drug-infused party drink known as "syzzurp," among other names. It's not clear if the Mission Viejo robbery is part of that trend.

A jury convicted William Joseph Carroll, 51, in the death of 36-year-old Ana Martinez of Trabuco Canyon, who was driving a minivan when Carroll’s pickup truck slammed into her head on.

About two hours after the crash, Carroll’s blood-alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit, authorities said.

In 2008, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence and was told that he could be charged with murder if he killed a person while driving drunk, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Ana Martinez is shown at right with her family in a photo provided to KTLA shortly after her 2013 death.

On May 7, 2013, Carroll was driving a truck shortly before midnight when he turned onto Santa Margarita Parkway going southbound in northbound lanes.

He drove about a third of a mile before hitting Martinez, who died at the scene.

Martinez left behind a husband and children who were ages 2, 7 and 15 at the time.

Carroll left a voicemail for a former girlfriend telling her he was drunk, was weaving across the roadway and was “going to die tonight,” the Orange County Register reported after his 2014 booking into jail.

He faces 15 years to life in state prison at his sentencing, scheduled for Jan. 19 in Santa Ana.

O.C. Authorities Seek Potential Additional Victims of Caretaker Who Allegedly Stole $1M From Elderly Man With Dementia

Authorities in Orange County are looking for additional victims of a caretaker accused of stealing close to $1 million from a now-deceased elderly man who had dementia, officials said Friday.

Ignacio Conlu Barandiaran, 35, of Long Beach, was charged on Nov. 9 and later arrested on suspicion of 18 felony counts, including caretaker theft from an elder 65 years of age or older, first-degree burglary and elder neglect. He also faces sentencing enhancements for property loss or damage over $65,000 and aggravated white collar crime over $100,000, according to an Orange County District Attorney news release.

Ignacio Conlu Barandiaran is seen in a booking a photo released from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office on Nov. 17, 2017.

Ignacio Conlu Barandiaran is seen in a booking a photo released from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office on Nov. 17, 2017.

Between December 2015 and March 2017, Barandiaran allegedly took money from the then 88-year-old victim’s bank account, burglarized the victim’s home, and used the victim’s credit cards to make purchases. He allegedly spent the victim’s money on personal purchases that included vehicles and drugs, officials said.

Barandiaran also allegedly attempted to sell the victim’s Mission Viejo home and tried to take out a reverse mortgage on the home without the victim’s knowledge, officials said.

He also allegedly made the victim sign over his power of attorney. Medical experts later determined that the victim’s health prevented him from knowing what he was signing or doing, officials said.

Banks affiliated with the victim’s accounts contacted adult protective services with concerns over the alleged fraudulent activity, Senior Deputy District Attorney Marc Labreche of the Major Fraud Unit said.

Labreche believes that there are potentially more victims out there based on his experiences in dealing with similar cases in the past.

Officials say that the case is still under investigation.

Anyone with information or who believe they have been the victim of the accused can call the OCDA Supervising Investigator Damon Tucker at 714-648-3615.

DUI Driver Sentenced 15 Years to Life After Killing Mother of 3 in Head-On Collision in Mission Viejo

A man who was driving drunk and got into a head-on collision that killed a mother of three four years ago has been sentenced 15 years to life in prison, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

The convicted DUI driver, 51-year-old William Joseph Carroll of Mission Viejo, was found guilty of one count of felony second degree murder by a jury in November. He was driving while drunk when his pick-up truck struck a minivan driven by 36-year-old Ana Martinez on the night of May 7, 2013, prosecutors said.

William Joseph Carroll is shown in a photo provided to KTLA in 2013.

William Joseph Carroll is shown in a photo provided to KTLA in 2013.

Prosecutors said that two hours after the crash, his blood alcohol content was .23 — about three times the legal limit.

But it wasn’t Carroll’s first time driving under the influence.

He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge in December 2008, over four years before the fatal crash in 2013, and was told at the time that he could be charged with murder if he killed someone while driving drunk.

In the deadly 2013 collision, Carroll made a left turn from El Toro Road onto Santa Margarita Parkway before driving into oncoming traffic, actually traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, prosecutors said.

For about one-third of a mile, he continued driving his Ford 250 truck the wrong way until the vehicle slammed head-on into the Toyota Sienna van being driven by Martinez, authorities said.

Alone inside the van, Martinez died following the crash. The Trabuco Canyon woman is survived by her husband and three children, who were ages 2, 7, and 15 when their mother was killed, prosecutors said.

After the crash, Carroll shows signs of intoxication and law enforcement officials discovered his blood alcohol content of .23, prosecutors said.

Carroll turned himself into authorities in New York after he was charged with the crime and taken back to Orange County on Feb. 2, 2014.

At his sentencing on Friday, Martinez’s daughter and mother read victim impact statements before the court, prosecutors said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department released this photo of Emma Pangelinan.

Emma Pangelinan's body was located by a hiker around noon amid heavy brush near Pinecrest Park, located at 21310 Pinecrest, the department confirmed Monday evening.

It was not immediately known how she died, but the Sheriff's Department indicated the girl's death did not appear suspicious. The Orange County coroner's office will conduct an autopsy as part of the investigation.

“The concern we had was that she’s 13 years old, last night was very cold, and we take any reports of missing children very seriously,” said sheriff’s Lt. Quyen Vuong.

Prior to Pangelinan being found deceased, Carrie Braun of the Sheriff's Department told KTLA that they believed the teen was a runaway.

The department did not release any other details about the ongoing investigation.

Friends and classmates brought flowers and lit candles at Pinecrest Park on Monday night to honor the well-known athlete, who was remembered for her personality, kindness and sense of humor.

“I’m just going to miss her smile and just how much ... of an amazing person she was” said friend Gianna Lopez.  “I just remember always hanging out with her in class, always … cracking jokes with her at lunch, just having good times with each other.”

Added Mia Nin, another friend: "She was a really nice classmate and she was great to be around."

Pangelinan played softball for a team called the Batbusters Shockey, which posted about the then-missing girl early Monday as they sought to locate her. In about 20 hours, the post was shared 20,000 times.

The two-vehicle crash occurred just south of Alicia Parkway about 10:55 p.m., Capt. Larry Kurtz of Orange County Fire Authority said.

Kurtz described the vehicle Ferrell was in as a "limo type" SUV. His driver, Mark Thomspon, was behind the wheel.

According to a news release from California Highway Patrol, another vehicle veered toward the front left of the SUV for undetermined reasons, causing the SUV to hit the right rear of that vehicle.

That caused the SUV to strike the center divider median and overturn, CHP said. It then came to a rest on its side in the middle of the northbound 5 Freeway, which had to be temporarily shut down.

Video from the scene showed Ferrell sitting up and apparently talking on a cellphone as he was being placed into an ambulance.

The 50-year-old actor sustained minor injuries, according to CHP. The United Talent Agency, however, said Ferrell and his colleague Andrew Steele were "unhurt."

Thompson, Ferrell's longtime driver, and Carolina Barlow, remained hospitalized in stable condition, UTA said.

The website IMDb lists Barlow as an assistant to Ferrell since 2015, while Steele's IMDb page includes credits as a comedy writer for "Saturday Night Live" and "Funny or Die."

"Will is staying close by as his friends are being treated, and has expressed his deep gratitude to the first responders who were immediately at the scene and to the hospital team that took such great care of them," a statement from UTA said.

CHP had said Thompson, a 62-year-old Venice resident, and Steele, a 56-year-old resident of Staatsburg, New York, sustained minor injuries. The agency had also said Barlow, 27, of Los Angeles, suffered major injuries. She was not wearing any "safety equipment," according to CHP's report.

All four people transported to the hospital, including a "trauma patient," were in the SUV, Kurtz said.

The other vehicle's driver, 22-year-old Jacob Espinoza of Fallbrook, was not injured, according to CHP.

While the cause of the crash was under investigation, CHP spokesperson Rafael Reynoso said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the incident.

Ferrell was traveling north from Oceanside, where he made an appearance as his "Anchorman" character Ron Burgundy in a voter participation drive by "Funny or Die," according to KTLA sister station KSWB in San Diego.

KTLA's Irving Last contributed to this report.

A jury found Adam Anthony Ingala-Whiting, 25, guilty of one felony count of second-degree murder on March 21, a news release read.

In the early morning hours of April 29, 2014, Ingala-Whiting responded to a Craigslist advertisement posted by Francesco Bonomolo, 47, of Mission Viejo, in which he solicited a sexual encounter, the DA’s office stated.

Ingala-Whiting murdered Bonomolo by stabbing him with a knife multiple times while in the victim’s residence, according to the statement. Days later, on May 4, an acquaintance went to the victim’s home at the Vista Real Apartments at 27260 Los Altos in Mission Viejo and discovered his body, officials said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case and arrested the assailant in San Diego County on May 12, 2014.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials on Thursday released a sketch of a man wanted in connection with robbing a woman while holding a gun near a Mission Viejo park.

The incident occurred about 10 p.m. Monday outside the victim’s home near El Dorado Park, officials said in a tweet.

The woman had just parked her car when the man got out of the passenger side of a vehicle and asked for directions to San Juan Capistrano.

The woman gave the man directions before he pointed a black handgun at her and demanded her wallet, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The man apparently got away in an older-model, tan four-door sedan that was possibly a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Authorities gave a partial California license plate number of 5GL593.

The man is described as being between 28 and 31 years old, with short dark hair, brown eyes and a possible tattoo on the left side of his neck. He was last seen wearing a baggy shirt and gray sweat pants.

A local resident named Colleen Mason said the incident is keeping her on high alert as it doesn't happen often in the neighborhood.

"Now, if someone pulls and asks for directions, I’m not comfortable talking to people," she said. "It’s just unbelievable that we’re just so protected here that we don’t see that kind of thing."

Anyone who recognizes the sketch can call OCSD at 714-647-7000. Anonymous tips can be submitted to OC Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS or online at http://occrimestoppers.org/submit-a-tip.
